EXHAUST SYSTEM COMPONENTS

The exhaust system is a contradictory intersection of the car. On the one hand, it is responsible for the environmental protection of emissions, and on the other hand, it has a great effect on the power and weight of the vehicle.

Function of Exhaust System

The function of the exhaust system is to collect exhaust gas from each engine cylinder, reduce exhaust noise and eliminate flames and sparks in the exhaust gas, so that the exhaust gas is safely discharged into the atmosphere, and control the emission of harmful substances in the exhaust gas.

Composition of Exhaust System

Exhaust system is generally composed of exhaust manifold, exhaust pipe, catalytic converter, exhaust temperature sensor, exhaust muffler and exhaust tailpipe.

(1)Exhaust pipe

The chassis arrangement of the exhaust pipe, the length of the exhaust pipe, the size of the exhaust pipe diameter, all of them affect the flow of the exhaust gas, thus affecting the mutual interference of air flow when the adjacent cylinders exhaust. On an EFI engine, the oxygen sensor is mounted on the exhaust pipe, which senses the oxygen molecule content in the exhaust and feeds it back to the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) to determine the proportion of the mixture that bursts into the engine.

(2)Exhaust Manifold

The exhaust manifold is connected to the engine block, and the exhaust of each cylinder is collected and introduced into the exhaust manifold. Exhaust manifold is usually made of iron or ductile iron with easy price and high temperature resistance, and also made of stainless steel tube. The stainless steel exhaust manifold has the advantages of light weight, good durability, smooth inner wall and low exhaust resistance. The shape of the exhaust manifold is very important. In order not to interfere with the cylinder exhaust and prevent exhaust backflow, and to make the best use of inertial exhaust, exhaust manifold should be made as long as possible, and each manifold should be independent and equal in length. Each cylinder has an exhaust manifold. A good exhaust manifold design will make the engine exhaust smoothly and increase power.

(3)Exhaust Muffler

The function of the exhaust muffler is to reduce the exhaust noise, reduce the noise of the engine exhaust, and eliminate the flame in the gas. A exhaust muffler is installed at the outlet of the exhaust pipeso that the exhaust gas enters the atmosphere after being muffled. The exhaust muffler dissipates exhaust energy by gradually reducing the exhaust pressure and attenuating the pulsation of the exhaust pressure.

(4)Exhaust Tail Pipe

The last section connected to the muffler is the exhaust tail pipe, which is the last section of the exhaust system that draws the exhaust gas out of the exhaust system car.

1)Operation Principle

After the exhaust valve exhausts the exhaust gas in the engine cylinder, it is sent to the exhaust manifold of each cylinder, then processed by the catalytic converter and silenced by the muffler, and finally discharged from the exhaust tail pipe.

2)Single Exhaust System

The small-displacement vehicle adopts single exhaust. During exhaust period of in-line engine, exhaust gas in cylinder passes through exhaust valve and exhaust manifold, then enters exhaust pipe, catalytic converter and muffler in turn, and finally exhausts to atmosphere.

3)Double exhaust system

The V-type engine or the large-displacement engine adopts double exhaust. The V-shaped engine uses two separate exhaust systems, each connected to the exhaust pipe, catalytic converter, muffler and exhaust tailpipe.

The exhaust system is closely related to the environment. How important the exhaust system is.
