COMMON EXHAUST PROBLEMS
Exhaust system refers to the system for collecting and discharging exhaust gas, including exhaust manifold, exhaust pipe, silencing pipe, tail pipe and resonator. The exhaust system of automobile plays a very important role in the safe and stable operation of automobile. In this paper, we will mainly discuss some common vehicle exhaust problems.
White Smoke from Exhaust
Under normal circumstances, when the car exhaust pipe is used for the first time, there will be white smoke and peculiar smell in the exhaust pipe. It is because the residual oil in the production process of the internal structural materials of the exhaust pipe reacts in the exhaust heat wave, and white smoke and peculiar smell will appear. Generally, it can completely disappear after about one day. This need not be worried.
Rust
The most likely problem with the exhaust system is rust on the parts. Generally, stainless steel products are not easy to rust in normal use, but due to the different environment and areas, rust occurs in the usage process.
Some vehicles are located in some coastal cities and coastal areas for a long time. The air and sea fog there contains salt, which is easy to produce corrosivity and rust. In addition, there are acid chemicals such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides and lead in the exhaust gas, which are easy to cause rust after a long time. Or some cars are close to the wet and gravel ground, corrosion becomes a common problem, leading to parts damage, and forming holes and cracks.
If the rust has developed to a considerable depth, you may notice that the engine makes a lot of noise, if it affects the muffler, or if the hole in the car exhaust pipe is corroded, it makes a hiss. Rusty parts need to be replaced in time.
Loose Parts
Over time, it is common for parts of the exhaust system to become loose. In most cases, a loose part can be quickly repaired at the lowest cost. It’s a typical signal if you notice a click while driving.
Block
Blockage of the exhaust system can lead to various emergency problems. There are many different reasons for blockage, from the entry of external debris into the exhaust pipe to the accumulation of soot and carbon in the catalytic converter, which can cause blockage. Slight obstacles are usually discharged from the vehicle. More serious obstacles will have a negative impact on the function of the vehicle.
The signs of blockage may be different. Pay attention to observe carefully. Clucking while driving may indicate something is interfering with the system. If the congestion is more serious, your car will feel sluggish, as if you drive a much high gear, the fuel consumption will increase, and the speed will be limited. If you find sulfur smell and the engine is hotter than usual, these may be signs of blocked catalytic converter, and the gas cannot escape normally through the system.
Abrasion
The wear of exhaust system components is inevitable, and the system has no infinite life. Wear may cause (but is not limited to) all exhaust problems previously discussed. The more noticeable wear parts of the exhaust system are the exhaust manifold and the oxygen sensor.
Worn sensors need to be replaced. Crack and wear damage of exhaust manifold is a serious problem, which should be repaired as soon as possible. Damage here may mean that gas can enter the passenger area, which is a direct danger to passengers.
Resonance
The performance of resonance is that the car idling, accelerator acceleration and throttle closing will produce a buzz (low frequency sound) inside the car, hard to hear. In general, there will be obvious exhaust noise at any time outside the car. At this time, it is necessary to check whether the exhaust installation is smooth and whether the hanging glue is natural. If there are still such problems after these checks, it may be because of the defects in product design, which will exist in some models of many so-called large brand small workshops in the market.
If you suspect that there is a problem with your exhaust system, you should hand over your vehicle to a professional service person in time for inspection, who can identify and repair any problem in time.
